SCO Duties
The SCO is the school's representative responsible for ensuring that eligible Veterans, Reservists, servicemembers, and dependents are promptly and properly certified in VA-ONCE. The SCO certifies students' enrollment to VA and notifies VA of any changes in a student's enrollment.
The SCO also informs the State Approving Agency (SAA) about relevant changes in the schools programs, policies, personnel, and documentation.
The SCO maintains records of VA students for official, mandated inspections.
UPDATE: VBA has made updates to the VA-ONCE system. The terminology used for entering a new student into VA-ONCE has changed from “adopting a student” to “adding a student.” While the terminology has been updated in the content of this course, you will still see the “adopt” term referenced in some videos.

When I was going to school on the Montgomery GI Bill, I would spend a lot of time in the registrar's office completing paperwork for my education benefits. It was a tedious process, very paper-based for me and for the school employees. Things are different and much better now. Since I've been an SCO, we do everything electronically. Sure, we still do some things the same way, like maintaining student records, but the most important part of our job now is done with the computer using VA-ONCE. I'll tell you more about VA-ONCE in the next lesson, but for now, let's start looking at the specific duties the SCO performs today.
